9 Realschule
f secondary school leading to intermediate qualification; GB: etwa middle school, USA: etwa middle ( oder junior high) school* * *A Realschule is a type of German secondary school. It normally covers a period of four or six school years and is designed to provide a general education that goes beyond that of a Hauptschule. After completing Realschule students may try for a Fachabitur at a Fachoberschule or serve an apprenticeship. If students from a Realschule achieve good examination results, they may move up to the eleventh year of a Gymnasium and attempt the Abitur. In Austria the functions of Realschulen are performed by mathematische Realgymnasien and extended Hauptschulen. 11 MITTLERE REIFE
mittlere Reife is the term still generally used for the intermediate school certificate. This is normally gained after successful completion of the six years (four in many Länder) in a Realschule. All pupils who complete their tenth year at a Gymnasium also automatically receive their mittlere Reife. If pupils from a Realschule achieve good examination results, they can move up to the eleventh year of a Gymnasium and try for the Abitur. The mittlere Reife entitles a pupil to attend a Fachoberschule and take the Fachabitur there after two years. See: → Abitur, Gymnasium, Realschule -
